Picking up the RIBA Yorkshire Award 2018, the award recognises the architectural brilliance of the building.
Architects Group Ginger created a design that would bring the Market Hall into the 21st Century whilst leaving the outside of this magnificent Grade II Listed Victorian building untouched apart from minor accessibility improvements.
The effective design creates space to put both traders and customer’s centre-stage, fostering the sense of community that people love about markets.
The new steel mezzanine floor sits politely within the walls of the Hall supporting new timber retail units and dining area whilst concealing all of the services required for the retailers below. New free standing ‘roofless’ timber gondolas enable the full extent of the Hall to be appreciated and preserve the view of all of the traders and activity taking place in the market.
A flexible events space was introduced to allow for casual trading, activities and entertainment, creating new opportunities for the building to reclaim its position at the heart of Scarborough.
